Homs, also known as Hums, is a city in central Syria located 162 kilometers (101 mi) north of Damascus and 46 kilometers (29 mi) southwest of Hama. It has a population of over 650,000 and is the capital of the Homs Governorate. The city has a rich history dating back to the Bronze Age and has been ruled by various empires throughout its history, including the Seleucids, Romans, Byzantines, Umayyads, Abbasids, Fatimids, Seljuks, Crusaders, Ayyubids, Mamluks, and Ottomans. Homs is also known for its cultural heritage, with many historical sites and landmarks, including the Great Mosque of Homs, the Citadel of Homs, and the Church of the Nativity. The city has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters.
