It lies approximately 30 miles south of the Nebraska border and 45 miles east of the Colorado border, at an elevation of 3,225 feet. The city experiences a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters, with average temperatures ranging from 15°F in January to 85°F in July. Hoxie has a rich history dating back to the 1800s when it was a major stop on the Smoky Hill Trail, a major trade route between the Missouri River and the Rocky Mountains. The city was named after H.M. Hoxie, a railroad official who helped establish the town in 1887. Hoxie is known for its agricultural heritage, with farming and ranching being the primary industries in the area.
