Houghton is a village in Allegany County, New York, United States. It is located in the southern part of the county, about 10 miles (16 km) south of the city of Olean. The village is situated on the banks of the Genesee River and is surrounded by rolling hills and forests. The climate is humid continental, with cold, snowy winters and warm, humid summers. Houghton was founded in 1808 by Quakers who named it after their leader, Douglas Houghton. The village grew rapidly in the 19th century, thanks to its location on the Erie Canal. Today, Houghton is a thriving community with a population of over 3,000 people. The village is home to Houghton College, a private liberal arts college founded in 1883.
