Hopewell, Virginia, formerly known as Khopuehlla, is a city located in the Tri-Cities region of Virginia, on the north bank of the James River. The city experiences a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Hopewell has a rich history dating back to the Native American Hopewell culture, which flourished in the area from 100 BCE to 500 CE. The city was later settled by Europeans in the 17th century and became a major industrial center in the 19th and 20th centuries.
