Hopen is a small island located in the Norwegian Sea, approximately 100 kilometers northwest of the Lofoten Islands. The island has a cold and windy climate, with an average temperature of 3 degrees Celsius. Hopen was first discovered by the Vikings in the 9th century, and was later used as a hunting and fishing base by the Sami people. In the 19th century, the island was used as a whaling station, and in the 20th century, it was used as a meteorological station. Today, Hopen is uninhabited and is managed by the Norwegian Polar Institute.
