The town was named after Homer, New York, which was named after the Greek poet Homer. The town was first settled in 1794 and was incorporated in 1808. The town is home to the Homer Central School District and the Cortland County Fairgrounds. The town is also home to several historical sites, including the Homer Historical Society Museum and the Homer Methodist Church. The town has a humid continental climate with cold, snowy winters and warm, humid summers.
