The town has a population of approximately 7,600 people and is known for its historic downtown area and its proximity to the Holly Springs National Forest. The town was founded in 1836 and was named after the holly springs that were found in the area. Holly Springs played an important role in the Civil War, as it was the site of several battles and skirmishes. The town is also home to Rust College, a historically black college that was founded in 1866.
