Highland Park is a city in Lake County, Illinois, United States, located 25 miles (40 km) north of Chicago. The city has a population of 29,612 (2020 census) and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Highland Park is known for its historic architecture, its parks and open spaces, and its excellent schools. The city was founded in 1856 by a group of Presbyterian ministers and lay leaders who sought to establish a community based on Christian principles. Highland Park quickly grew into a thriving town, and by the early 20th century, it was one of the wealthiest suburbs of Chicago. The city's history is reflected in its architecture, which includes a number of Victorian and Edwardian mansions. Highland Park is also home to several museums and historical sites, including the Highland Park Historical Society Museum and the Ravinia Festival, one of the oldest and most prestigious music festivals in the United States.
