Hengyang has a long history, dating back to the Qin dynasty (221-206 BC). It was an important military and commercial center during the Song dynasty (960-1279) and was the capital of Hunan province from 1949 to 1954. The city is home to several historical and cultural sites, including the Hengshan Mountain, the Nanyue Temple, and the Hunan Provincial Museum.
