Hammond, Indiana, is a city located in the northwestern part of the state, just across the state line from Chicago, Illinois. The city has a humid continental climate with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Hammond was founded in 1868 by George H. Hammond, a meatpacking magnate, and was named after him. The city's early history was closely tied to the meatpacking industry, and it was once home to one of the largest meatpacking plants in the world.
