The name is derived from the Old Saxon words "halst" (neck) and "beke" (brook). Halstenbek was part of the County of Holstein-Pinneberg until 1640, when it became part of the Duchy of Holstein. In 1867, Halstenbek became part of the Prussian Province of Schleswig-Holstein.
