The commune was first mentioned in 1025 as "Gruchet" and was part of the Duchy of Normandy. In the 12th century, the commune was granted a charter by Henry II of England, and in the 13th century, it became part of the Kingdom of France. The commune's heritage includes the Church of Saint-Martin, which was built in the 12th century, and the Château de Gruchet-le-Valasse, which was built in the 17th century.
