The city was founded in 1854 by Josiah Bushnell Grinnell, a Congregationalist minister and abolitionist. Grinnell is home to a number of historic buildings, including the Grinnell College campus, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The city also has a strong arts community, with a number of theaters, art galleries, and music venues.
