Gorno-Altaysk, capital of the Altai Republic in southern Siberia, Russia, is situated at the confluence of the Maima and Katun Rivers, 3,358 km east of Moscow. The city has a humid continental climate, with cold, snowy winters and warm, rainy summers. Its history dates back to 1830, when a Russian fort was established on the site. In 1922, the city became the capital of the Oirot Autonomous Oblast, which was renamed the Altai Republic in 1991. Gorno-Altaysk is a cultural and economic center for the region, with a rich heritage that includes traditional crafts, music, and dance.
