Gernrode, also known as Bad Gernrode, is a town in the Harz district of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, located at the northern foot of the Harz Mountains at an altitude of 230 meters (750 ft). The town has a humid continental climate with average temperatures ranging from -1.1 °C (30.0 °F) in January to 17.9 °C (64.2 °F) in July. Gernrode was first mentioned in 961 and has a rich history, including being the site of a Benedictine abbey founded in 961 by Margrave Gero. The town is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture, including the Collegiate Church of St. Cyriakus, which was built in the 11th century.
