Gagarin, formerly known as Gzhatsk, is a city in Smolensk Oblast, Russia, located at the confluence of the Gzhat and Vazuza rivers. The city has a humid continental climate with warm, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Gagarin is home to the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, where Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin trained before becoming the first human to travel into space. The city also has a rich history, dating back to the 12th century, and is home to several historical landmarks, including the Church of the Assumption and the Gagarin Museum.
