The city has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Frontenac was founded in 1857 by French-Canadian settlers and is named after Louis de Buade, Comte de Frontenac, the Governor of New France from 1672 to 1682 and from 1689 to 1698. The city is home to a number of historic sites, including the Frontenac Park Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
