Freeport is a borough in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, United States, with a population of 1,813 as of the 2020 census. It is located along the Allegheny River, about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Pittsburgh. The climate in Freeport is humid continental, with cold, snowy winters and hot, humid summers. The borough was founded in 1795 by George Rapp and his followers, who were members of the Harmony Society. The society was a religious group that believed in communal living and pacifism. The Harmony Society established a number of businesses in Freeport, including a glass factory, a woolen mill, and a distillery. The society also built a number of buildings in the borough, including the Harmonie Vereinshaus, which is now a National Historic Landmark. The Harmony Society disbanded in 1905, and Freeport was incorporated as a borough in 1906. Today, Freeport is a thriving community with a strong sense of history and heritage.
