Fort Stockton is located in the Chihuahuan Desert and has a hot, arid climate. The city was founded in 1859 as a U.S. Army fort to protect settlers from Apache raids. Fort Stockton played an important role in the Indian Wars and the Mexican Revolution. The city is home to several historic sites, including the Fort Stockton Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
