The village was founded in 1793 by General "Mad" Anthony Wayne as a military outpost during the Northwest Indian War. Fort Recovery is home to the Fort Recovery State Memorial, which commemorates the Battle of Fort Recovery, which was fought on August 3, 1794. The village is also home to the Fort Recovery Historical Society Museum, which houses artifacts from the village's past.
