Fort Knox is a United States Army post in Kentucky, located approximately 30 miles (48 km) southwest of Louisville. The post is best known as the site of the United States Bullion Depository, which stores over half of the country's gold reserves. Fort Knox was established in 1861 as a training camp for Union soldiers during the American Civil War. The post was named after Henry Knox, the first United States Secretary of War.
