Fort Defiance is a census-designated place (CDP) in Apache County, Arizona, United States. It is located at an elevation of 6,968 feet (2,124 m) above sea level and has a population of 3,709 people (as of the 2020 census). The CDP is located in the Navajo Nation and is the seat of Apache County. The weather in Fort Defiance is semi-arid, with hot summers and cold winters. The average temperature in July is 85 °F (29 °C), while the average temperature in January is 30 °F (-1 °C). The CDP was founded in 1851 as a military outpost to protect the Navajo people from raids by other tribes. The fort was abandoned in 1861, but was reestablished in 1868. Fort Defiance played an important role in the Navajo Wars and was the site of the signing of the Treaty of Fort Defiance in 1868, which ended the wars.
