Eschweiler, or Aischwiele in local dialect, is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, located between Aachen and Cologne at an altitude of 110 meters (360 ft) above sea level. The city has a temperate oceanic climate with average temperatures ranging from 3°C (37°F) in January to 18°C (64°F) in July. Eschweiler's history dates back to the 10th century when it was first mentioned in a document. The city was granted town privileges in 1344 and became part of the Duchy of Jülich. In 1794, Eschweiler was occupied by French revolutionary forces and became part of the Roer Department. After the defeat of Napoleon in 1815, Eschweiler became part of the Kingdom of Prussia. The city's industrial development began in the 19th century with the establishment of textile and coal mining industries. Today, Eschweiler is a modern city with a diverse economy and a rich cultural heritage.
