The commune was first mentioned in the 11th century, and its name is thought to come from the Latin word "novalia", meaning "new land". The commune was part of the County of Flanders until 1668, when it became part of France. The commune's heritage includes the Château d'Ennevelin, a 17th-century castle, and the Église Saint-Martin, a 12th-century church.
