The town has a population of 2,811 as of the 2010 census. Emmitsburg was founded in 1785 by German immigrants and was named after John Emmit, a local landowner. The town is home to Mount St. Mary's University, a private Catholic university founded in 1808. Emmitsburg is also known for its historic churches, including St. Joseph's Catholic Church, which was built in 1794. The town has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and cool, wet winters.
