Elx, also known as Elche, is a city in the province of Alicante, in the Valencian Community, Spain. It is located on the southern coast of the Iberian Peninsula, 23 km southwest of Alicante. The city has a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Elx has a rich history, dating back to the Bronze Age. It was founded by the Iberians and later became a Roman colony. The city was conquered by the Moors in the 8th century and remained under their rule until the 13th century, when it was reconquered by the Christians. Elx is known for its palm groves, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is also home to the Basilica of Santa Maria, a Gothic church that was built in the 14th century.
