Elst is a village in the municipality of Overbetuwe in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is located on the north bank of the river Waal, about 10 km west of Nijmegen. The village has a population of about 20,000. The average temperature in Elst is 9.6 °C, with an average high of 14.6 °C and an average low of 4.6 °C. The average annual precipitation is 820 mm. Elst was first mentioned in 855. The village was granted city rights in 1233. Elst was an important center of trade and commerce in the Middle Ages. The village was also home to a number of monasteries and churches. Elst was heavily damaged during the Second World War. The village was rebuilt after the war, and it is now a modern and prosperous community.
