Elkader is a city in Clayton County, Iowa, United States. It is located at the confluence of the Turkey and Volga Rivers, in the northeastern part of the state. The city has a population of approximately 1,200 people and is known for its scenic beauty and its historic downtown district. The city was founded in 1846 by a group of German immigrants and was named after Elkader Bey, an Algerian prince who had fought in the Algerian War of Independence. Elkader has a humid continental climate with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. The city's average temperature in July is 75 degrees Fahrenheit (24 degrees Celsius), and the average temperature in January is 15 degrees Fahrenheit (-9 degrees Celsius). Elkader is home to a number of historic buildings, including the Elkader Opera House, which was built in 1866 and is one of the oldest opera houses in Iowa.
