Elizabeth City is a city in northeastern North Carolina, United States, on the Pasquotank River near the mouth of the Albemarle Sound. It has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. The city was founded in 1794 and was named after Elizabeth Freeman, the wife of one of the founders. Elizabeth City has a rich history and heritage, and is home to a number of historical sites, including the Museum of the Albemarle and the Elizabeth City Historic District.
