El Jem (also known as Thysdrus) is an ancient Roman city located in central Tunisia, approximately 150 kilometers south of Tunis. It is renowned for its remarkably preserved amphitheater, which is one of the largest and best-preserved Roman amphitheaters in the world. The city has a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Its history dates back to the 3rd century BC, when it was founded by the Carthaginians. It later became a prosperous Roman colony and a major center of olive oil production.
