The borough is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area and is situated about 5 miles (8 km) east of downtown Pittsburgh. Edgewood has a humid continental climate with warm, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. The borough was founded in 1888 and was named after the estate of Thomas Mellon, who was one of the founders of the Mellon Bank. Edgewood has a rich history and heritage, and is home to several historic landmarks, including the Mellon Park Historic District and the Edgeworth Club.
