It is located in the northeastern part of the Lüneburg Heath, about 15 kilometers (9 miles) east of Uelzen. The village has a population of about 2,000 people. It was first mentioned in a document in 955, and was granted market rights in 1276. Ebstorf is home to the Ebstorf Map, a famous medieval world map that was created in the 13th century.
