East Rutherford is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States, with a population of 9,159 as of the 2020 census. It is located on the Hackensack River, just east of Rutherford and west of Carlstadt. The borough is home to the Meadowlands Sports Complex, which includes MetLife Stadium, home of the New York Giants and New York Jets football teams. East Rutherford has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. The borough was originally settled by the Dutch in the 17th century and was known as "Rutherford's Meadow" after John Rutherford, who owned a large tract of land in the area. East Rutherford was incorporated as a borough in 1889.
