Dzerzhinsk, formerly known as Chernorech'ye, is a city located in the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast of Russia, situated on the Oka River, 38 kilometers west of Nizhny Novgorod. The city has a humid continental climate, with warm, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Dzerzhinsk was founded in 1930 as a center for the chemical industry and was named after Felix Dzerzhinsky, the founder of the Soviet secret police.
