Durango, also known as Victoria de Durango, is the capital and largest city of the state of Durango, Mexico, located in the northwest of the country at an altitude of 1,890 meters (6,200 feet) above sea level. The city has a humid subtropical climate, with average temperatures ranging from 15 to 30 degrees Celsius (59 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit) throughout the year. Durango was founded in 1563 by Francisco de Ibarra and was named after the Basque town of Durango. The city played an important role in the Mexican War of Independence and was the capital of the state of Durango from 1824 to 1836. Durango is home to a number of historical and cultural landmarks, including the Cathedral of Durango, the Church of San Agustin, and the Museo de Durango. The city is also known for its traditional crafts, such as pottery, textiles, and leatherwork.
