The town was founded in 1754 by Quakers and was originally known as Quaker Hill. It was renamed Dover Plains in 1829. The town has a rich history and heritage, with many historic buildings and sites, including the Dover Plains Friends Meetinghouse, which was built in 1763 and is the oldest Quaker meetinghouse in the United States.
