Dix Hills is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Huntington in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 26,892 at the 2010 census. Dix Hills is located on the North Shore of Long Island, approximately 35 miles (56 km) east of Manhattan. The climate is humid continental, with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. The area was originally inhabited by the Matinecock Native Americans. European settlers arrived in the 17th century, and the area was known as "Dix Hills" by the 18th century. The name is believed to derive from the Dutch word "dix," meaning "ten," and refers to the ten hills in the area.
