It is located in the eastern part of the county, on the Bistrița River, and is composed of eight villages: Băhnășeni, Bogdana, Dărmănești, Dămienești, Lunca, Păltineasa, Tăvădărești and Văleni. The commune has a temperate continental climate, with average temperatures ranging from -2°C in January to 22°C in July. The area has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, and was first mentioned in a document in 1438. The commune is home to several historical and cultural monuments, including the Dărmănești Monastery, built in the 15th century, and the Barbu Știrbei Mansion, built in the 19th century.
