The city has a rich history and heritage, dating back to the pre-Columbian era when it was inhabited by the Pipil tribe. It was later conquered by the Spanish in the 16th century and became a part of the Captaincy General of Guatemala. Cuscatancingo gained independence in 1821 and became a part of the Federal Republic of Central America. In 1841, it became a part of the Republic of El Salvador.
