The town is situated on the north shore of San Francisco Bay and has a mild climate with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The history of Corte Madera dates back to the 18th century when it was part of the Rancho Corte Madera del Presidio, a Spanish land grant. The town was founded in 1858 and incorporated in 1916. The town's heritage is reflected in its many historic buildings, including the Corte Madera Inn, which was built in 1887.
