Cortazar, Guanajuato, Mexico, formerly known as Villa Cortazar, is a city located in the central-eastern part of the state of Guanajuato, at an altitude of 1,750 meters (5,740 feet) above sea level. The city has a humid subtropical climate, with an average annual temperature of 18 °C (64 °F) and an average annual precipitation of 700 millimeters (28 inches). Cortazar was founded in 1603 by Spanish settlers and was originally named San Francisco de Asís de Cortazar. The city's name was changed to Cortazar in 1826 in honor of José María Morelos y Pavón, a Mexican revolutionary leader. Cortazar is known for its colonial architecture, its traditional Mexican cuisine, and its proximity to the city of Guanajuato, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
