It is located on the south shore of Long Island, approximately 60 miles (97 km) east of Manhattan. The weather in Coram is humid subtropical, with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. The hamlet was originally settled by the Coram family in the 17th century. The Coram family were English Quakers who came to Long Island seeking religious freedom. The hamlet was named after Thomas Coram, a prominent Quaker who was involved in the founding of the colony of Georgia.
