Cohoes is a city in Albany County, New York, United States, located on the east bank of the Hudson River, across from the city of Troy. It has a humid continental climate with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. The city was founded in 1674 by Dutch settlers and was originally known as Van Schaick's Island. It was renamed Cohoes in 1831, after the Mohawk word for "canoe". The city's history is closely tied to the textile industry, and it was once a major center of textile production. Today, Cohoes is a diverse community with a strong economy and a rich cultural heritage.
