The town has a humid continental climate with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. The area was first settled by German immigrants in the 1730s and was originally known as "Cleona" after the Greek muse of music. The town played a significant role in the American Revolution and was home to several iron furnaces during the 19th century.
