Civitavecchia, also known as Chivitavekk'ja, is a city and comune in the province of Rome, in the Lazio region of central Italy. Located on the Tyrrhenian Sea coast, about 60 kilometers northwest of Rome, it is a major port and industrial center. The city has a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Civitavecchia has a rich history, dating back to the Etruscan period. It was later conquered by the Romans, who built a port there. The city was subsequently ruled by the Byzantines, Lombards, and Saracens. In the 15th century, it became part of the Papal States. Civitavecchia is home to a number of historical and cultural attractions, including the Forte Michelangelo, the Fontana del Vanvitelli, and the Museo Nazionale Cerite.
