The town has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and cool, wet winters. Chester was founded in 1793 by General William Irvine, and was named after Chester, Pennsylvania. The town has a rich history and heritage, and is home to several historic sites, including the Chester Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
