The town has a humid continental climate with warm, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Chertkovo was founded in 1749 as a Cossack settlement and became a town in 1954. It is known for its historical and cultural heritage, including the Chertkovo Museum of Local Lore, which houses exhibits on the town's history and culture.
