Central City is a small town located in the Midwestern United States in Marion County, Illinois. It is situated approximately 41 miles east-southeast of St. Louis, Missouri, and 25 miles west-northwest of Carbondale, Illinois. The town has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and cold, wet winters. Central City was founded in 1853 and was originally known as "Centralia". The town's name was changed to "Central City" in 1893. The town's history is closely tied to the coal mining industry, which was once a major economic driver in the area.
