Its history dates back to the 10th century, when it was a stronghold of the Canossa family. The town is most famous for the "Walk to Canossa" in 1077, when Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV sought absolution from Pope Gregory VII after excommunication. Canossa is home to the Castle of Canossa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Ghiara.
