The town was first mentioned in 1275, and it was part of the Kingdom of Croatia from the 12th to the 15th century. Brinje was occupied by the Ottoman Turks from the 15th to the 17th century, and it was part of the Habsburg Monarchy from the 17th to the 19th century. The town became part of Yugoslavia in 1918, and it was part of Croatia from 1991 to the present day.
